STILL I RISE

Ramiro Davaro-Comas

In 2022 The Arts Center of the Capital Region partnered with Troy Central School District and School 2 to produce a mural that was 9 feet high by 150 feet long, spanning the parking lot and facing an important thru road.

In May 2022, Muralist Ramiro Davaro-Comas spent an entire day inside the Art Room of Troy City School District School 2. Throughout the day he met with over 70 children ages K-5. He gave them prompts regarding their favorite things about themselves, the school, and the community. The kids responded with drawings, images, and words.

After the school day had ended, Ramiro met with various community members to get their input on what they would like to see represented within the mural.

Of the 80 images, ideas, and drawings given to Ramiro on that day, 60 are represented in the mural. Many of the drawings the kids made were traced directly onto the design.

The Mural is also greatly influenced by Maya Angelou’s poem “And Still I Rise” with text from the poem throughout the design alongside the children’s and community’s images.

The Community then came together again in June 2022 to help paint the mural.
